Already,\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chathamhouse.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/2021-02-03-food-system-biodiversity-loss-benton-et-al_0.pdf\">farming is the world\u2019s greatest cause<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/nature14324\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">habitat destruction<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-019-10775-z\">greatest cause<\/a>\u00a0of the global\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41559-017-0234-3\">loss of wildlife<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S0140-6736(18)31788-4\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">greatest cause<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of the global\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.scitotenv.2015.07.022\">extinction crisis<\/a>. It\u2019s responsible for about\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ecologyandsociety.org\/vol22\/iss4\/art8\/\">80% of the deforestation<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>that\u2019s happened this century. Unless something changes, all this is likely to get worse \u2013 much worse.<\/p>\n<p>In principle, there is plenty of food, even for a rising population. But roughly half the calories farmers grow are now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2017RG000591\">fed to livestock<\/a>, and the demand for animal products is rising fast. Without a radical change in the way we eat, by 2050 the world will<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/biosci\/bix010\"><strong>need to grow around 50% more grai<\/strong>n<\/a><\/span>. How could we do it without wiping out much of the rest of life on Earth? ..Only when livestock are extremely sparse is animal farming compatible with rich, functional ecosystems [proponents of <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/savory.global\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/about-holistic-planned-grazing.pdf\">Holistic Planned Grazing<\/a> <\/span><\/strong>may disagree].<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>..The anticipated growth in crop yields would require 146% more fresh water than is\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.advwatres.2016.11.015\">used today<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. Just one problem: that water doesn\u2019t exist. ..And all this is before we come to the soil, the thin cushion between rock and air on which human life depends, which we treat like dirt.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Soil degradation is bad enough in rich nations, where the ground is often<a href=\"https:\/\/bsssjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/sum.12068\">\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">left bare and exposed to winter rain<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, compacted and wrecked by overfertilisation and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/1365-2664.12372\">pesticides<\/a>\u00a0that rip through its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.scitotenv.2020.138328\">foodwebs<\/a><strong>.<\/strong> But it tends to be even worse in poorer nations, partly because extreme rainfall, cyclones and hurricanes can tear bare earth from the land, and partly because hungry people are often driven to cultivate steep slopes. Sustaining even current levels of production might prove impossible \u00bb \u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Monbiot ibid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Restoring soil and human health<\/u><\/strong>. We now know that soil quality and food-quality are but two sides of the same coin. That means, the basis of your own health begins with how the food is produced.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Restoring farmers economy and livelihood.<\/u> <\/strong>An illustration is provided by the\u00a0Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.\u00a0 FAO referred, already in 2016, to the consequences of the neo-liberalization of the Indian economy:<\/p>\n<div id=\"52AD2192_191A_4A25_6BDF_CC50FCFD217A\">\n<p><strong><em>\u201c<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0neoliberalization\u00a0of the Indian economy led to a deep agrarian crisis that is making small scale farming an unviable vocation. Privatized seeds, inputs, and markets are inaccessible and expensive for peasants. To put this into perspective: It is estimated that a general increase of only 0.4% carbon content per year in the world&#8217;s agricultural soils will be enough to stop the increase of CO2 in the planet&#8217;s atmosphere <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Dag J\u00f8rund L\u00f8nning (2017:179) Jordboka.
